Legislation Update - Work at Height

Falling from height remains a major cause of deaths and major injuries in the workplace.

The 2005 Work at Height Regulations and associated guidance are now up for review which will need to be completed by April 2013. In 2007, the HSE commissioned a report that concluded the 2005 regulations were starting to have an impact in a number of areas.  This is very positive news and hopefully the review will lead to a further reduction in the number of fatalities and injuries.

If you have a work at height issue that you would like to discuss call us on 01270 589615.  In 2005 we had already been working at height safely for 18 years.

25 Years of Up and Under - Quiz 2

1988 - There was only one correct entry for the 1987 quiz and as it was my wife there was no prize ;o)  So let's see how we get on with 1988, the year Up and Under started to do interesting stuff!

Q1. Below is a picture of Andy underneath Battersea Bridge over the Thames in London.  In the Autumn of 1988 the bridge was hit by a barge, what was it carrying? - the barge not the bridge!

Q2. Below Andy is seen tapping away at the side of Bishop's Court in Guildford, our first rope access job.  The brief was to survey the building to detect loose 'slip bricks' - what is a slip brick?

Q3. This isn't a case of extreme short sightedness, but part of an inspection of a clock tower in Dartmouth.  Which military service used this clock to get to lectures on time, and why?

There you go hopefully these will be a little easier and we will be able to send out a prize this time, answers submitted by 1st May please.

Safe and Great Quality - Certified!

We have just undertaken an in depth, three day, re-certification audit for ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 which included a site visit to one of our projects on Thelwall Viaduct.  It was successfully completed with no non conformances.

The two auditors commented on our "comprehensive systems, unique ideas and positive culture within the organisation".

What a mess pigeons make!
The process of external audit is in place to ensure that our systems are compliant with the standards and also act as an opportunity for us to compare our systems against the experience of best practice that the auditors have.  This can lead to improvements that benefit customers and staff alike.  This audit was the first one to combine  both 9001 and 18001, previously they have been conducted separately.

The full standards, which are valid for 3 years, are:

UKAS Accredited ISO 9001:2008 - Quality Management System Certification
UKAS Accredited BS OHSAS 18001:2007 - Occupational Health and Safety Management System Certification

Up and Under Group Asset Management Success

The Up and Under Group were named the 16th largest UK Consultant in list of "Top Firms in Facilities/Asset Management" in the 2012 NCE Consultants File.

keeping good company
This largely reflects our sucess in the areas of highway and rail bridge inspection and maintenance projects.  Other projects include condition based asset management projects for building stocks and even a project to monitor the condition of statues, flagpoles and chimneys for a client.  It isn't often that coming face to face with a gargoyle leads to success.

We go way beyond inspections so if you want a reliable asset management partner call us on 01270 589615 or visit www.upandundergroup.com.
